The Program

Option available pending approval from the University Travel Risk Review Committee

The Bilkent Exchange program located in Ankara, Turkey is a great study abroad opportunity for ALL Drexel students. This program directly immerses Drexel students into Turkish education and culture as you take classes with local and international students.

For more information please visit http://www.bilkent.edu.tr/bilkent/academic/exchange/

Academics

All classes at Bilkent are taught in English. There is no foreign language requirement. Students have the option of registering for Turkish as a Second Language I or II, in addition to their normal courses.

Program Calendar
Students should prepare to make adjustments and be flexible in fitting this program into their Drexel schedule. Due to the need for cycle adjustments, students should begin planning 12-18 months in advance.

* Fall semester: early September - early January
* Spring semester: February - end May

Students with fall/winter class have two options: 1) arrange with professors to take Bilkent final exams early (early exams are at the discretion of individual faculty members. Neither Drexel nor Bilkent can guarantee that all professors will allow this) OR 2) Students can change their co-op cycle to Winter/Spring. This would allow students to take Bilkent final exams in early January, and be on co-op for winter and spring terms. Keep in mind, this option would require an independent co-op search as well as a cycle adjustment.

Students with spring/summer class should consider going to Bilkent during the spring semester/term, leaving their winter co-op early. Students would then have a one month break before returning to Drexel in June for summer term classes. During this month students could return to their co-op, travel in Turkey or elsewhere or return to the United States.

Bilkent Course Equivalents.xls List of Bilkent courses that have been approved for Drexel equivalencies. If there are courses that you would like to take abroad that are not listed, you will need to get equivalents approved by the appropriate department at Drexel. For example, if you want to take a sociology course for Drexel credit, the Sociology Department must pre- approve the course and equivalency.

Grading: Students are taught and graded by Turkish faculty at Bilkent University. Grades are noted as "CR/NCR" on their transcript and will NOT affect their GPA. In order to receive CR students must earn a "C" or above at the host institution. The goal is to be a full-time student at the host institution while also taking the equivalent of a full-time load at Drexel.

The Experience

Ankara, is where the eastern and western worlds converge. It is a huge university town and the local streets and venues are filled with students from around the world during most of the year. Capital city status and the presence of language schools and universities has brought a large ex pat community to Ankara and all this adds to the western feel of the city.

Bilkent provides students with on-campus dormitory style housing. For the 2014-15 academic year Bilkent will provide all incoming exchange students with free accomodation on campus in double rooms.

For more information on being an exchange student at Bilkent, please visit their International Students page.

Students are required to obtain a visa for entry into Turkey. This process may take 6-8 weeks so students should act early. Visa Instructions.pdf

Tuition & Financial Aid
This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus your Drexel tuition and financial aid remain the same during the term abroad. Students may also want to submit a revised budget to Drexel Central to see if additional funding may be available.

Students who receive Federal Work Study should consider applying for the Study Abroad Online Journalist work study position (only available to students after acceptance).

Scholarships
Those interested in seeking additional funding should review Scholarship & Funding Opportunities. Remember that scholarship deadlines may be much earlier than study abroad deadlines, so plan accordingly.

Safety and Security

PENDING DREXEL UNIVERSITY TRAVEL WARNING REVIEW COMMITTEE APPROVAL

Turkey currently has a State Department Travel Warning.

All students who wish to participate in the program are required to read the United States Department of State Travel Warning and will propose their travel to the University TRR for review. Students should discuss the review process with their study abroad advisor. In addition, all students are strongly advised to purchase travel insurance when purchasing plane tickets should the United States Department of State Travel Warning change in such a way that would require Drexel University to cancel the program.
