Barcelona Study Tour Fall 2013
The Architecture Program is facilitiating a Fall Study Tour Abroad in Barcelona (ARCH 499, Section 701), in September, 2013. Prior to the tour, introductory lectures and readings in Philadelphia will acquaint students with the history, arts and of Barcelona. Students will also initiate a research project that will be completed on their return to the United States. The study tour includes eight days of intensive touring in Barcelona followed by four final days touring medieval and Roman sites in the Catalonian countryside and a visit to Calatrava’s extraordinary City of Art and Sciences in Valencia. The group will visit numerous museums, gardens, and historic and contemporary sites.
Required text: Barcelona by Robert Hughes.
Credit: Students will be registered for ARCH 499 Special Topics Class which is worth 3 credits. The course satisfies the History/Theory in the architectural curriculum and humanities for other majors.
When: The course is scheduled during fall term 2013. On-campus class sessions will be announced with exact dates to follow. Tentative dates for the Barcelona study tour are September 4 - 17th.

Accomodations in Barcelona: Rooms will be reserved for participants in a residencia conveniently located in central Barcelona within walking distance of many important buildings and ancient sites. Estimated prices are based on double or triple occupancy.
Who may participate: The course is open to all Drexel students who meet the following prerequisites: ARCH 141-143 (Architecture, and Society I, II, & III). Exceptions to this requirement will be considered.

2. Study Abroad Program Fee: $1125 covers the following:-Room & breakfast in Barcelona (38 euros x 8)
-Room in Villa Engracia (2 nights)
-Room in Valencia
-Dinner (one night) at Villa Engracia
-Brunch (2) at Villa Engracia
-Room near Barcelona airport (1 night)
-Advance ticket purchases
3. Out of Pocket Expenses: Approx $2091 covers the following:
-Books (est.) $30
-Air Fare r/t (Philadelphia-Barcelona) $1,000
-Medical & Travel Insurance $36
-Ground travel: Barcelona $50
-Other Museum Fees (need student ID) $100
-Meals ($30/day x 12) $360
(some money will be collected from students
in Spain to pay for our collective picnics)
-Misc. personal expenses $300
-Contingency Fee (50 euro, paid in Barcel.) $70

All applicants are welcome to apply for a special Architecture & Interiors summer study tour scholarship. Scholarships range from $400 - $1000 and will help to offset the out of pocket expenses of the program. Scholarship application is included in the online study abroad application.
