Kline in France: European Union Law

Rennes, France

Program Overview

The Spring Break Course in Rennes, France will have three components: (1) readings and a lecture on legal principles applicable in civil law countries; (2) lectures on the growth of European private law, French criminal law, and British common law; (3) a final paper in which students will analyze an aspect of U.S. law taking a comparative approach to French or European law. This one-credit course will introduce Kline law students to civil law, which is the legal system of most of the world, and to the growing influence of E.U. law. By studying aspects of other legal traditions, Kline law students will develop a more nuanced and critical approach to the U.S. common law system.

Rennes is the capital of the Brittany region in Northwest France. Rennes is a dynamic city where researchers, faculty and students make up about one third of the population. Majestic 18th century buildings overlook spacious public squares, and La Vilaine River runs across the city, which is a two-hour trip from Paris and one hour from historic destinations such as Mont Saint-Michel and Saint-Malo.
