Programs : Brochure
- Locations: Cienfuegos, Cuba
- Program Terms: Spring
- Restrictions: Drexel applicants only
In collaboration with the University of Cienfuegos, students will interact with the cultures of Cuba with the intent to capture the sonic lifestyle of the country. During the one-week workshop, Drexel students will be spending half of the time at La Universidad de Cienfuegos attending lectures and seminars. The remaining time will be spent recording location sound of Dance troupes, Theater Groups, Cultural Tours, and music ensembles. The techniques of recording these types of situations mirror the craft of location sound recording for films, radio, and television in a sense that we will be recording in all types of environments and not necessarily in controlled studio spaces. In addition, the group will record a daily podcast of each day’s events. Equipment will be supplied by Drexel University and directed by Associate Teaching Professor John Avarese. Before leaving for the trip, students will meet once with Avarese to familiarize them with the equipment and objectives of the trip. At its core, this Film Sound workshop will record the sonic landscape of Cuba in a variety of cultural situations. These audio productions mirror the professional practice of location sound recording for film, video, and television. The workshop’s sole focus will be on audio, without the concern of avoiding cameras.
Program Objective: By the end of this workshop, students will have recorded and cataloged a collection of real-life scenarios, artist’s performances, interviews, sound effects and ambiences (atmospheres) around the coastal city of Cienfuegos.
Students will be registered for FMVD T280 for 3 credits as part of their spring term course load.
Students must leave space for 3 credits in their spring credit load or must pay for credits exceeding the 20 credit maximum.
The course credit for this program is not optional. There are no pre-requisites for this class.
