Aberdeen Kinds College Picture

Program Overview

The University of Aberdeen is a public research university in Aberdeen, Scotland. Founded in 1495, it is Scotland’s 3rd oldest university and the 5th oldest university in the English-speaking world. The university is ranked in the top 200 in the world, and top 30 in the United Kingdom, according to the Times Higher Education rankings. University of Aberdeen is part of the “Four Ancients” in Scotland, which is the Scottish equivalent of the Ivy League.
Aberdeen is a vibrant, creative and ambitious city, known for its coastal historic charm and cosmopolitan community. Based on the North East Coast of Scotland, Aberdeen finds itself in the perfect location for mixing colorful city life with exploring miles of surrounding countryside. The city itself has a dynamic and friendly community, known not only for being the Cultural Centre of the North East of Scotland, but also Scotland's Safest University City, the Happiest City to Live in the UK and even one of Scotland's Sunniest Cities.

The McNeil Scholarship
Drexel has been selected by the St. Andrews Society of Philadelphia McNeil Scholarship for a full year scholarship guaranteed for one student. The selected student must study abroad for the full year (fall, winter, and spring) at University of Aberdeen to receive the scholarship.
The McNeil scholarship is up to $25,000 and will cover expenses (such as housing, flight, etc.) while abroad.
The McNeil scholarship requires the winner to spend two semesters (Sept-May) at Aberdeen, so 5COP students will need to begin their spring/summer co-op late, and 4COP/NCOP students will need to take spring quarter off. All students should speak with their academic advisors to adjust their schedules accordingly.
A minimum 3.25 GPA is required, and the scholarship is only available for U.S. Citizens. As a part of the scholarship, the winner will have a project. Details of the project to be worked out with a study abroad advisor.

Any outside funding you receive must be taken into account when your eligibility is determined for need-based financial aid. If you have been offered funding from a source outside the university, you must submit copies of the notification letter to Drexel Central. Outside funding you are receiving may result in a change to your eligibility for the financial aid offered by Drexel.

For more information about the scholarship, click here.

Deadline to apply for McNeil scholarship: Jan 25

  • 3.0 minimum GPA; 3.25 for McNeil Scholarship
  • Open to all majors

Course Equivalencies
Course Equivalencies: Students will need to get courses approved by the appropriate department for each course they plan to take at Aberdeen if the course is not on the course equivalency spreadsheet (linked above).  For example, if you want to take a sociology course at Aberdeen for Drexel credit, its equivalent must be pre-approved by the Sociology Department at Drexel.

Students are taught and graded by UK faculty at the University of Aberdeen. Grades are noted as "CR/NCR" on their transcript and will NOT affect their GPA. In order to receive CR, students must earn a "C" or above at the host institution. Students must be a full-time student at the host institution while also taking the equivalent of a full-time load at Drexel.

Tuition & Financial Aid
This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus your Drexel tuition and financial aid remain the same during the term abroad. Students may also want to submit a revised budget to Drexel Central to see if additional funding may be available.

Students who receive Federal Work Study should consider applying for the Study Abroad Online Journalist work study position (only available to students after acceptance).
