Fall Break in Singapore:
Psychiatric Rehabilitation; Functioning in the Community
This course will afford students the opportunity to apply psychiatric rehabilitation principles and practices in an international behavioral health community. Students will compare national and international service delivery of recovery-oriented services. Students will have the opportunity to explore community-based application of psychiatric rehabilitation services to environments of choice (living, learning, working, and socializing). Students will explore the inclusion of psychiatric rehabilitation as it pertains to the Singaporean behavioral health communities through site visits and meetings with experts in psychiatric rehabilitation and mental health policy. One unique opportunity will be to meet with professionals who are preparing to sit for the psychiatric rehabilitation certification. To prepare for the program, students will be introduced to concepts and methods of demography and epistemology as it pertains to Singaporean culture, population, and governmental behavioral health goals.
By participating in this program, students will be able to:
- Define the concepts of recovery, the benefits of community integration, and the principles of psychiatric rehabilitation.
- Describe key methods by which to ensure federal laws, regulations, and funding support recovery-oriented practices.
- Dialogue with international agencies to determine implementation of evidence-based practices of psychiatric rehabilitation.
- Apply strategies to minimize discrimination and stigma to improve the delivery of mental health services.
- Analyze the implications of incorporating psychiatric rehabilitation in country.
- Describe major historical events or patterns that affect the current environment of the country you visited.
- Define ethnocentricity and reflect on what biases you have based on your cultural background.
- Investigate, in detail, one aspect of the international experience that facilitates a recovery-orientation to behavioral health services.
- Compare and contrast one feature of the American with Disabilities Act to the fundamental mental health service delivery.
- Observe psychiatric rehabilitation services and reflect on how these services affect community function for the mental health population.
Credit/Registration: Students will be registered for BACS T380 / BACS T580 Psychiatric Rehabilitation, 3 credits as part of their fall term course load. Undergraduate students must leave room for the credits in their credit load when registering for fall term, or will be billed for credits exceeding the 20 credit maximum. Graduate students will be billed for 3 Drexel credits at their normal rate.

Day 1: Arrival and Welcome
- Afternoon: Group Trip to Merlion and River Tour
- Evening: Debrief and orientation
Day 2: Overview of Singaporean Behavioral Health Services
- Morning: Small groups to tour the various stations. Students will interview a participant of the program for his/her utilization of the services. Lunch reception to follow.
- Afternoon: Student pairs create a video employing several of the 12 Core Principles of Psychiatric Rehabilitation.
- Evening: 5:30-7:00 pm Debrief of the day; Free time
Day 3: Institute of Mental Health
- Morning: Sharing of the previous day videos. Discussion for which Core Principles were used and why. Student feedback to each team of videographers. Development of interview questions for the Peer Support specialists for application to the pre-departure reading material. Discussion of the goals of the day visit to the Peer Support programs.
- Afternoon: Peer Support Panel Presenters
- Evening: 5:00-6:30 pm Debrief for the Day; Visit China Town for souvenirs and dinner
- Morning: *Tour of facility
- Afternoon: Meeting local experts Francis Goo and Koh Chee Wai. Students continue with the CPRP process for reviewing the mini-training by Sharon Tan; Students pair up for the presentation of how they would plan for application, current courses that count toward being eligible to sit for the exam, taking a mock examination.
- Evening: 5:00 pm- 6:30 pm Dinner near hotel; 7:00 - 8:30 pm Debrief for the day; Free time
Day 6 (Tentative): Visit to Nanyang Technical University (NTU)
- Morning: *Discussion of PSYR dictionary, disability, and persons in recovery; Multicultural discussion
12:30 - 1:30 pm: Meeting Paul Chim and Tan Wen Xiang
Strengths Assessment; Discussion of two types of service delivery; Comparison and Contrast discussion begins for the paper that is due upon return for comparison and contrast of existing MH services in-country and those in the US; Students interview Dr. Leong and staff of the program.
2:00 pm - 5:00 pm: Visit to the Botanical Gardens
- Evening: Free time
- Morning: Tour NTU campus; Discussion of behavioral Health in Singapore; Student collaboration with NTU students.
- Afternoon:*PSA Presentations (Public Service Announcements); * Feedback to student pairs, planning for future student engagement;
3:00 - 5:00 pm: Free Time
- Evening: Farewell dinner with Yvonne Kiang; Dr. Joseph Leong, Sharon Tan and Julius Chan.
Day 7: Check out of hotel; Breakfast; Departure to US
Due May 1, 2020: $500 Advance Payment + $25 Application Fee
Due July 1, 2020 - $400 Final Payment

- US Citizens are not required to have a visa for Singapore. Other nationalities should check the Singapore consulate website for visa requirements.
- A recommended flight to/from Singapore will be provided. Students must book their own airfare.
