Fall Break in Portugal:
Thinking Abroad: Leadership and Organizational Culture

Portugal

Program Overview

This Intensive Course Abroad is a 4-credit course in which you will explore leadership theory and practice under various models and situations, that can be used in personal, academic, community, professional. and career leadership development.  The program will also highlight the culture and history of Portugal, while using films that have been set in and/or made in the country over recent decades.  You will view a series of films that demonstrate the application of leadership theories and practices, and discuss ideas with faculty, peers and guests, in conjunction with on-site activities that include visits to leadership centers, organizations and cultural landmarks.  You will also relate learnings to leadership in organizations and other professional environments.  There will be guided tours of various aspects of the country’s culture and history (in particular the settings and environments portrayed in the films).

Upon successful completion of this program, you will be able to:

  • Explain various theories, styles, traits, behaviors, and applications of leadership through various thought leaders, including prominent ones from the country of visit, others such as Covey, Goleman, Kouzes, Posner, Maxwell, Blanchard, etc., as well as through tools such as The Enneagram
  • Explore ideas that connect directly with personal leadership goals and prior experiences – which may include topics such as Socratic Leadership, Servant Leadership, Transformational Leadership, Authentic Leadership, Participative Leadership, or another area you select; and you may also focus on the concept of Followership and how that relates to being an effective leader
  • Provide a summary and analysis of several movies set or filmed in the city and country, the leadership acumen studied and its application and use in the plots, decisions, and events of the films, and how characters’ leadership choices affect people and situation
  • Relate leadership and film content to the information discussed at various leadership centers or in sessions with leaders of prominent organizations and universities, making connections for furthering personal goals in leadership development
  • Participate in a volunteer activity applied to leadership development and growth in the local community
  • Understand and appreciate the overall beauty of the country, its sites, food, drink, and general culture in the context of global leadership and awareness
