Drexel in Greece: Field Camp

Program Overview

This is a one-week field course designed to prepare students for successful careers in the geosciences. Course emphasizes scientific methodology and traditional techniques that provide a strong foundation for the broad range of modern technologies used by today’s industry, academic, government and private workforces. Students learn to collect field observations and measurements, compile detailed rock descriptions, measure stratigraphic sections, and construct geologic maps and cross sections. This course is repeatable for credit.

This course is open to Pre-Juniors, Juniors,and  Seniors.

Academics

Credit/Registration
Students will be registered for GEO 375 for 3 credits as part of their fall term course load. Students must leave room for the credits in their fall credit load when registering for fall term, or will be billed for credits exceeding the 20 credit maximum.

Pre-reqs: GEO 101 or GEO350/550.

*Students may extend their travel independently before or after program dates.

Itinerary Overview

Day 1	Travel to Kos  Students are responsible for their travel to the town of Kardamena, on the island of Kos (KOS airport is the destination), by 9/6. Group stays at the Agiri hotel in Kardamena in the evening of 9/6
Day 2	Take boat to Nisyros Overview of the volcano + exploration
Day 3	Photogrammetry exercise (Nisyros caldera) Capture of photographic data in Nisyros hydrothermal zone. Generate 3D terrain model using structure-from-motion
Day 4	Carbon dioxide and temperature survey (Nisyros caldera) A survey of temperature and diffuse degassing of CO2 from Nisyros hydrothermal craters
Day 5	Features of mafic volcanism Mafic volcanic sequence of Holaki / Mandraki Explosive mafic sequences of Nisyros caldera Meet with the mayor’s office about volcanic hazards
Day 6	Stratigraphy exercise (Nisyros caldera) Detailed stratigraphy of the caldera road cut
Day 7	Stratigraphy and mapping (Pali / Lies) Stratigraphy and mapping of the Lies volcanic sequence Farewell dinner
Day 8	Nisyros history and culture (Mandraki) Visit of the ancient acropolis + free exploration 3:30pm: boat departs for Kardamena. Stay in Kardamena on 9/13, flights depart in the morning.
Day 9	Flight home

Program Fee - $ 1525

Due 5/1/2025 - $500 Advance Payment + $25 application fee
Due 7/1/2025 - $1025 Final Payment
*All payments are non-refundable unless declined admission or program cancels for unforeseen reasons.

*$1000 grants generously supported by the Vidalakis Scholars Fund will be awarded to all accepted students with a 3.0 GPA and above.  Awards can be used toward out of pocket expenses such as flight and course materials. All recipients are required to complete a post travel survey and testimonia. Awards will be posted to students' DrexelOne account AFTER final program fee is paid.

ICA Financial Aid: Students may request an Adjusted Cost of Attendance by submitting the ICA program fee and estimated out of pocket expenses listed above to Drexel Central (via askdrexel). Doing so could make students’ eligible for additional financial aid.  Students may also be eligible to apply for Drexel's ICA Scholarships.

• US citizens do not need a visa to participate in this program, but students of other nationalities should confirm entry requirements.
• A recommended flight itinerary will be provided. Students are responsible for booking their own airfare.
